punishment

I'm curious. For those of you who believe in God...

Do you believe that God punishes us right here and now (not just at the end) when we disobey Him? I'm not talking about consequences. Of COURSE there are consequences for our decisions. But I'm talking about God actually stepping in and DOING something right then and there to punish us.

Any Scriptures you can find would be just swell. I want to know what you all think. I know which way I lean...I've been studying this concept quite a bit and have a lot of thoughts).

(Do I even have enough readers who are willing to comment on this?! Hmmm...not sure...)

Short answer - not my whole thought out one...Deut 32:50-52

"There on the mountain that you have climbed you will die and be gathered to your people, just as your brother Aaron died on Mount Hor and was gathered to his people. This is because both of you broke faith with me in the presence of the Israelites at the water....and because you did not uphold my holiness amoung the Israelites. Therefore, you will see the land only ..."

He has been known to punish directly - yes?

And of course there is always Hebrews 12:6 "because the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes everyone he accepts as a son."

Hey I know you don't know me from Adam, but I saw your question about punishment.
I don't think God punitively punishes us for our sin and disobedience. If we are in Christ there is no condemnation (Romans 8.1), but Hebrews 12.6 certainly makes it clear that God does step in and creates pain in our life to correct us out of a heart of love. The difference is that punitive punishment is based on justice, not on love and grace. We are never punished or disciplined as our sins deserve, because Christ took our sins on the cross. God is definitely involved in our lives. He does step in like a loving Father to hurt us if our way is going to destroy us.

I think that distinction needs to be made.
We are also adopting from Rwanda!! Paperchase is almost over, but not quite there. I've been listening to the Radical Life sermon series, which is all very odd.
Thanks!

Well said, Jason...and nice to meet you! Sounds like we have a lot in common...and to add to it, I'm actually from Indiana! We live in SC now, but only for the past 6 years. Where exactly are you from in Indiana?

And are you going through AWAA?

WHY THE BLOG?

I'm striving to live a life less-ordinary. As followers of Christ our lives should not look like everybody elses. We should be more giving, more loving, more passionate, more sure, more...radical. But we're not. We blend in and desperately want to fit in. This blog is my journey toward to a "radical" life that doesn't look like the rest of the world.
