A "Radical" Life
Striving to live a life less-ordinary.

what's the point of church anyway?

Wowser. I'm pooped.

Spent the majority of the last couple o' days out in the yard...in the beating sun...shoveling, pulling, doing things my body is not used to. I've got sunburns and blisters and aches that make me seriously question my ability to get up crazy early in the morning to set up and lead a worship service. After all, it takes a good amount of energy to lead with passion. And I hate leading without passion...but I also don't want to fake it. It's kind of weird thing to wrestle with mentally and emotionally.

But then I was reminded of this little thing I was talking to the band about this past Thursday at practice. There's a line in the "In a Pit With a Lion on a Snowy Day" book that says "Don't let what's wrong with you keep you from worshiping what's right with God." "Worship is about zooming out and refocusing on the big picture." "Worship is forgetting what's wrong with you and remembering what's right with God."

Our current circumstances should not dictate whether we worship God well or not. Sometimes, we come into a worship service that is supposed to be all about God and we make it all about us. We're tired. We've had a long week. We're emotionally drained. And we don't feel like worshiping.

Can I get an "amen?"

But here's the deal. We've got it all backwards. Worship isn't about us. It's about God.

Do you go to church for YOU? So that you can feel better? So that you can check it off your Christian to-do list? Do you go just to hang out with friends or to sing songs because you like the band? Do you go because you like the "style" or because someone's making you or expecting you?

Or do you go to meet with the Creator of the universe?

So yeah, I'm really wiped. And tomorrow will be physical tough. But I will worship my God, because He's quite literally the reason I exist and because tomorrow morning (and EVERY day for that fact) is not about me or how I feel. It's about a God who loves me beyond all reason, and who is good and perfect and who just wants to meet with little ol' me. Because my circumstances will never change who God is. (Thank goodnes)

For those of you who go to church, make sure that tomorrow morning you step back and get some perspective. Ask yourself why you're there. Really.

WHY THE BLOG?

I'm striving to live a life less-ordinary. As followers of Christ our lives should not look like everybody elses. We should be more giving, more loving, more passionate, more sure, more...radical. But we're not. We blend in and desperately want to fit in. This blog is my journey toward to a "radical" life that doesn't look like the rest of the world.
